New Delhi : Commuters on the Dwarka-Noida and Dwarka-Anand Vihar routes heaved a sigh of relief Friday as Delhi Metro’s new six-coach trains ended the perennial jostling for space they were used to.
Delhi Metro said the new trains had provided comfort to harried passengers on the two busy routes.
“As we thought, adding two more coaches has given commuters a comfortable ride,” a Metro official told IANS. But there was no noticeable increase in the number of passengers.
The new trains began functioning at 9.30 p.m Thursday. But their efficacy was in test Friday.
Several passengers gave them their thumbs up.
“Metro has become very overcrowded in recent times. With the six-coach trains, I hope the congestion will stop,” said Anitha Mamgain, a commuter.
DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan said earlier Friday that the problems of overcrowding would be tackled soon.
“Commuters need not bother about overcrowding as every fourth and fifth day, we are going to introduce six-coach trains in the fleet in various corridors.”
He admitted that the frequent snags were of great concern to him, and that the Metro was taking corrective measures.
Delhi Metro completed eight years of operations Friday. In 2010, 66 km of network was added and 100 new trains were pressed into service.
