Ban’s panel on climate change may meet in April

New Delhi : The high-level panel on climate change being convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is likely to meet in April to discuss how to mobilise financial resources for aiding climate change mitigation, a senior UN official Thursday said.

“Given the fact that the whole question of finance is so crucial in moving forward on climate change talks, the UN secretary general is considering establishing a panel to look at particularly innovative ways of mobilising financial resources to assist developing countries to address climate change,” Yvo De Boer, the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), told reporters.

“At the moment it is a decision he is taking and not from our (UNFCCC’s) formal processes… (With the various heads of states) We talked about possible timings and venues. But I don’t expect anything in March, but maybe around Easter (April) is the only time that could be done,” De Boer added.

The official added that there were a number of countries “not eager about the notion of meeting around that time”.

The UN secretary had convened the panel soon after the Copenhagen meeting in December on grounds that climate challenge issues take resources and developing countries need assistance to rapidly scale-up clean energy efforts. Around $30 billion were pledged during the summit to help developing countries with climate change mitigation processes.
