Mexico City : At least 28 people were killed in mudslide caused by torrential rains during the past four days in central Mexico and other regions.
Ten people were killed in Mexico Friday rising the toll to 28 in the area. The number of affected could reach 20,000, officials said.
Eight people were killed two days ago in the towns of Angangueo, Tuxpan and Zitacuaro, public safety spokespersons told Efe.
President Felipe Calderon visited Michoacan Friday and discussed with the authorities the situation caused by overflowing of the Tuxpan River and the San Pedro dam.
Earlier, seven people were killed after being trapped in a mudslide while travelling by road in Mexico, local government officials said.
Three people, including two minors, were killed in separate incidents of mudslide Thursday near the capital city.
Governor Enrique Pena Nieto said that 7,000 homes in Mexico have been affected by flooding and mudslide.
Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in various parts of Michoacan and Mexico and military personnel have been deployed for rescue operations in the affected areas.
“We’re having to work extremely hard. There’s no more water (rain), but we have to lower the water level that can still be observed throughout the area,” Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said.
