New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Thursday asked the central government to table in parliament the action taken report (ATR) on the Ranganath Mishra Commission’s recommendations for welfare of religious and linguistic minorities in the country.
“It is the normal practice that any report of a commission constituted by the government of India must be brought to parliament along with an action taken report. This lapse, hopefully, should be corrected in the forthcoming budget session,” said the CPI-M mouthpiece People’s Democracy in its latest issue editorially.
“Only then will the country and the people know how the government intends to implement the recommendations of the commission,” it said.
“Though the commission submitted its report to the prime minister in May 2007, it was tabled in parliament only in December, 2009. The Congress party’s prevarication on this issue is clearly established by this delay,” it said.
The United Progressive Alliance government is yet to come up with an action taken report on these recommendations, the party mouthpiece said.
The CPI-M slammed the Congress for criticising the West Bengal government’s decision to give 10 percent reservation in government jobs for socially and educationally backward Muslims.
The Congress had termed the recent announcement by Bhattacharjee as an “election gimmick”.
“The decision of the West Bengal government is based on the recommendations of Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission. The CPI-M had broadly welcomed the commission and its recommendations,” said the editorial.
The Ranganath Mishra Commission was established Oct 23, 2004, and its report was tabled in parliament in December last year.
