‘Dikshit, Digvijay not provided security on Bareilly visit’

Lucknow: The Congress’ Uttar Pradesh unit Saturday accused the Mayawati government of not providing adequate security to Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh during their visit to the state’s Bareilly city Thursday.

Accompanied by Congress state unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the two leaders had gone to offer a “chaddar” at the famous dargah of Imam Ahmad Raza Khan, a prominent cleric belonging to the Barelvi Islamic school.

“However, lack of proper security led to chaos on the road leading to the dargah, as a consequence of which the Delhi chief minister nearly fainted and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister hurt his foot,” state Congress spokesman Subodh Srivastava said here.

According to him, Joshi was also jostled and pushed around, following which the Congress leaders had to seek refuge in someone’s house.

“We have submitted a memorandum to Governor B.L.Joshi, seeking a high level probe into the lapse which could have led to grave consequences,” Srivastava added.
