Chandigarh: Ninety-eight villages have been selected in Haryana for being provided all modern civic amenities on the pattern of cities.

Announcing this here Wednesday, a spokesman of the Development and Panchayat Department said that an amount of Rs.425 crore is being spent on modernization of villages across the state out of which these 98 villages will also get special funds.

The amount would be spent on lining of village streets, drainage, providing facilities of drinking water and individual toilets in all the households.

The selected villages are spread across 21 districts in Haryana.

Following sanctioning of funds by the state government, over 10,500 workers (sweepers) have been engaged to improve sanitary conditions in the villages.

Over two dozen villages in different districts of Haryana have already stopped the practice of open defecation and residents of these villages are using toilets built there.
