Paraguayan president discharged from hospital after surgery

By IANS/EFE,

Asuncion (Paraguay) : Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo was discharged from a hospital in this capital after a prostate operation, officials said.

Lugo, 58, was taken Saturday from a private hospital in Asuncion to the president’s official residence, Mburuvicha Roga, where he will undergo a minor medical procedure and then continue to rest before resuming his duties Wednesday, President’s Office spokespersons said.

The surgeon who operated on Lugo, Cayo Estigarribia, said Saturday that the head of state is in optimal condition after Friday’s one-hour surgery.

Estigarribia, who had said the day before that the surgery would reduce the president’s ability to procreate, added that the president was operated on due to “symptoms of lower urinary tract obstruction caused by prostatic hypertrophy”.

Lugo, a former Catholic bishop, found himself immersed in scandal last year after three women said he had fathered their children while he was in the priesthood.

The president recognised one two-year-old boy as his son, while the other two women later withdrew their paternity claims.

Lugo, who had been released from his vows by the Vatican in an unprecedented move, was inaugurated Aug 15, 2008, after winning election at the head of a broad-based coalition.
