Berlin : India and Iran topped the list of carpet sales in Germany during the first 10 months in 2009, with each country selling 32.9 million euros (RM159.75 million) worth of carpets, according to Iranian national news agency (Irna) citing the Federal Statistical Office’s report on its homepage Tuesday.
A total of 2.2 million square metres of carpets from all over the world, worth 119 million euros, were imported into Germany.
Some 90 percent of the imported carpets originated from India (1.1 million square meters), followed by Nepal (400,000 square meters), Iran (300,000 square meters) and Pakistan (200,000 square meters).
Iranian carpet imports in Germany witnessed the largest drop during the first 10 months last year, down 38.7 percent from the corresponding period in 2008.
Iranian carpet sales in Germany have slumped in recent years as a result of the import of cheaper machine-made carpets from China and India as well as an ineffective marketing strategy, according to German-based carpet experts.
