Chicago: US prosecutors have opposed the bail plea of Pakistani-born Canadian terror suspect, Tahawwur Hussein Rana, charged with a planning role in the deadly November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He faces a possible life sentence.
Rana, 49, the owner of a Chicago-based immigration service, was already facing a possible 30-year sentence in connection with plans to attack a Danish newspaper whose cartoons were offensive to much of the Islamic world.
Federal prosecutors said in court papers Friday, after Rana was charged in the Mumbai attacks, which have been blamed on Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the possible sentence is now life term – all the more reason not to release him.
A Chicago court has asked the LeT operative to respond to the prosecutors’ submission by Jan 20.
Rana along with three others, including David Coleman Headley — a US national of Pakistani origin — was Thursday indicted by a federal grand jury on 12 counts of involvement in the Mumbai attacks and planning a terror strike against a Danish newspaper in Copenhagen.
