Kolkata: West Bengal’s business community paid rich tributes to veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu Sunday, recalling his contribution to the state.
“Not only in Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, Jyoti Basu was known all over the world. His demise is a sad affair…he was such a nice man. I had met him 3-4 times and on many occasions had spoken to him over the phone. All the communities in Kolkata are unhappy today on his passing away,” Basant Kumar Birla, Chairman of the B.K. Birla Group of Companies said.
“A life of great turmoil and struggle has finally come to an end. India is poorer on account of his demise,” Rama Prasad Goenka, founder and chairman emeritus of RPG Group, said.
Praising his leadership ability and contribution to the communist movement, Peerless General Finance and Investment Co. Ltd managing director S.K. Roy told IANS: “He ushered in a new era in Indian democracy. His presence raised the prestige and increased the strength of the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist).”
Roy said had Basu got the opportunity to become prime minister, he could have brought some positive changes.
Roy was all praise for Basu for the role he played in popularising affordable housing for the middle class people. “He first propounded the concept of affordable housing for the middle class people in the state. He was very sharp and meticulous.”
Sanjeev Goenka, Vice Chairman of RPG Group, said: “Basu brought stability and direction during his unparalleled tenure as chief minister.”
“He was a very humble and caring person besides being a tall political leader,” Harshavardhan Neotia, chairman Ambuja Realty, told IANS.
“He had an intuitive mind and had the ability to grasp things very quickly. He had great practical wisdom,” he said.
Added Sanjay Budhia, managing director, Patton India: “He was a living legend. A figure larger than life. The countrymen will respect him for his acumen, achievements and statesmanship.”
“Even after he retired from active politics, his house Indira Bhavan remained a point of call for all the dignitaries visiting the city. He helped bring immense agricultural growth in the state.”
