Telangana shutdown to continue Thursday

Hyderabad: The 48-hour shutdown in Telangana region to press the demand for statehood will continue for the second day Thursday, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of students said Wednesday evening.

The JAC made the clarification a couple of hours after one of its leaders told reporters that there would be no shutdown Thursday.

The JAC in its statement said buses carrying pilgrims to Medaram Jatra, a tribal fair in Warangal district, would be exempted from the shutdown.

The shutdown called by JAC after a student committed self-immolation over the Telangana issue, evoked total response on the first day.

Meanwhile, the JAC of political parties and other pro-Telangana groups have also declared its support to the shutdown for the second day.

JAC convenor M. Kodandaram told reporters that it also decided to back the students rally proposed to be organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here Jan 23.

The JAC appealed to people to boycott the programmes of state ministers from Telangana as they had refused to resign in support of the demand for a separate state.
