Somnath Chatterjee stable in Kolkata hospital

By IANS,

Kolkata : Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, hospitalised with a chest infection here, is stable with no deterioration in his condition, doctors attending to him said Monday.

“He is stable. He has a slight fever,” Sumon Ghosh, medical superintendent of the AMRI Hospital, told IANS.

“His condition is as it was yesterday (Sunday). He has occasional chest and back pain,” Ghosh said.

Chatterjee was on normal diet and slept well Sunday night.

The 80-year-old was admitted to a private cabin late Saturday night with fever, cough and cold under chest specialist Subhasish Ghosh.

Chatterjee, a former parliamentarian, presided over the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.

He was expelled from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in 2008 for presiding over a Lok Sabha trust vote in mid-2008 disregarding a diktat from the party to step down from the speaker’s post after it withdrew outside support to the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the India-US civil nuclear deal.
