Haryana mango production soars

By IANS,

Chandigarh: Mango cultivation is gaining ground in Haryana with its production and area under cultivation increasing by nearly three times in two decades, an official said Saturday.

Financial Commissioner Roshan Lal said that mango production went up from 19,900 tonnes in 1990-91 to 64,570 tonnes in 2009. He attributed this to the use of latest technology by farmers.

The area under mango cultivation also increased from 3,553 hectares to 9,125 hectares. An additional 250 hectares would be brought under mango plantation in 2010-11.

“In Haryana, mango occupies a prominent position and it is grown in 25 percent of the total area under fruit cultivation. The maximum area under mango cultivation is in Yamunanagar district with 5,419 hectares followed by Ambala, Panchkula, Karnal and Kurukshetra,” he added.
