Implement our suggestions: Women’s panel

By IANS,

New Delhi: Expressing its unhappiness over most of the recommendations made by women’s commissions remaining unimplemented, the National Commission for Women (NCW) Monday said it will consult the government for tabling its reports and the action taken on them.

Addressing the media at the beginning of a meeting with representatives from state women commissions, NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said the commission would write to the central and state governments to ensure that the reports submitted by the commissions are tabled in the respective assemblies and the parliament.

“Every time we submit reports, but they are not tabled. We are not agitating but yes we are disappointed,” Vyas said.

“We will take up the issues with the concerned parliamentary committee as well. The recommendations along with the action taken report (ATR) must be tabled,” she added.

The two-day meet of the representatives of NCW, various state women commissions and police will focus on having a comprehensive approach towards women’s issue.

The other issues to be taken up are major legislations including those against sexual harassment at the workplace and sexual assault, marriageable age for girls, misuse of the dowry legislation, the rampant honour killings.

“We call it horror killing, the law ministry is drafting a law against it based on our recommendations. It will be discussed with the stakeholders here so that they know how to respond to these cases,” Vyas said.

“The biggest problem is that common people are not aware of the laws that exist. We are now focusing on educating the masses about laws like domestic violence act,” she said.

The meeting will also deliberate on issues like the security of women workers in BPOs, other sectors where late shifts are required, rehabilitation of victims of domestic violence and other violence like acid attacks and a host of other issues.
