Chandigarh : The flood situation remained grim in Punjab’s Mansa district although no fresh breach was reported in the Ghaggar river Thursday, an official said.
In the Sardulgarh sub-division, in Mansa, at least 30 villages were submerged in water and several acres of agriculture land was inundated.
“We are trying our level best to control the flood situation. Army and paramilitary troopers are also assisting us in the rescue operations. But in the last 24 hours there has been no significant drop in the water level and the Ghaggar is still flowing above the danger mark in some areas,” Mansa Deputy Commissioner Kumar Rahul told IANS Thursday.
Patiala, Sangrur, Mohali, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Moga and Mansa districts of Punjab were badly affected in the floods during the last few days.
Amarjeet Singh Dullat, chief engineer (irrigation), told IANS: “Situation is under control in most parts of the flood-affected districts of Punjab. No fresh breach has been reported in the last 24 hours in any of the river or canal.”
In the neighbouring state of Haryana, the situation continued to be worrisome in its Sirsa district.
“Around 14,000 people have left their houses, located in at least nine villages in flood-hit areas of Sirsa. Though the water level has receded, but at some places we still have three to four feet water. We are monitoring the situation very closely,” said an official of Sirsa administration Thursday.
The relief work is also on in other flood affected districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal and Fatehabad.
Unconfirmed sources said that one man and his teenaged nephew were drowned in the flood water in Fatehabad district Wednesday.
According to official figures, so far, 33 people have lost their lives in floods in Punjab and Haryana.
