New Delhi: The environment ministry Tuesday ordered a feasibility study of proposed hydroelectric projects on the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Uttarakhand.
“In view of the fact that a series of hydroelectric projects are planned, under implementation and operational on the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, it has been decided that a comprehensive study may be undertaken on the likely cumulative impact of the projects on the flow and character of the river,” said an official statement.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, will conduct the study.
According to the ministry, a review of environmental impact and assessment of individual hydroelectric projects have been made on a standalone basis. This study would determine the requirement of minimum flow from the proposed and already commissioned
hydroelectric projects on these rivers along their entire stretch.
The ministry also feels that the cumulative environmental impact of various hydroelectric projects on the riverine ecosystem, terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity needs to be undertaken.
The study holds importance as there was a controversy over clearance of the 600 MW Loharinag Pala hydroelectric project on the Bhagirathi.
