New Delhi : Both houses of parliament were adjourned till 12 noon Tuesday following protests over price rise by opposition members as well as Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs.
Soon after the proceedings began in the Lok Sabha, members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) stood up and shouted slogans against increasing prices. Speaker Meira Kumar repeatedly urged that the issue could be raised after question hour, but to no avail.
Members of the SP moved towards the speaker’s podium and also started shouting slogans. They were joined by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs, who, however, raised the issue of the water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Meira Kumar allowed Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj to speak. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said notices had been given for an adjournment motion on the burning issue of price rise by the NDA and members of other parties.
She said the issue had been raised not just by the opposition but also by the parties supporting the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
She demanded the suspension all other business and immediate discussion on the motion.
As members of the NDA, the Left, SP and RJD continued their protest, Meira Kumar adjourned the house till 12 noon.
The proceedings had begun with the lower house paying homage to former member Gaurav Singh Mann who had died.
There were similar scenes in the Rajya Sabha that was adjourned after protests by the opposition parties along with the SP and the RJD.
As soon as the house assembled, opposition members stood up in protest against price rise and they raised slogans. Repeated attempts by chairman Hamid Ansari to calm the members were not heeded, forcing him to adjourn the house till noon.
