Lucknow: An angry mob indulged in arson and vandalism at a police outpost, protesting the death of a teenaged boy, who was mowed down by a tractor in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad district Wednesday.
Demanding arrest of the erring driver, who absconded after the accident, the mob clashed with the police. They forced their way inside the Peepalpur police outpost, burnt official documents and destroyed furniture and other belongings.
The victim, identified as Hemraj, 14, was crushed to death Wednesday afternoon by a tractor that spun out of control in the Dhoomanganj area in Allahabad, some 200 km from here.
Police later baton charged the protesters in order to disperse them.
“We had no other option, but to use force against the locals after they became unruly. No one was seriously injured in the incident,” Dhruv Singh, a police officer, told reporters in Allahabad.
In the wake of the violent protests by the locals, additional security has been deployed in the area and the adjoining places.
“The situation is tense, but under control. Adequate security has been deployed to avert any untoward incident. Efforts are on to nab the erring driver of the tractor,” Singh added.
