Kathmandu : United Telecom Ltd (UTL), a joint venture between three Indian companies and a Nepali firm, survived a fire scare Friday when a blaze in a building housing its main office here was doused before it could reach the outfit’s premises.
Police said a fire broke out at the Triveni complex in the city’s busy commercial area, Putali Sadak, early Friday, gutting two offices on the sixth floor and destroying property and documents worth millions of rupees.
The offices of Nepal Tea Development Board and Triveni Trading Company were badly damaged in the fire that took two hours to be brought under control, police said.
Though UTL towers were affected, its offices, spread on two floors in the same building, were unaffected, police said.
India’s Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd and Tata Communications Ltd partnered with Nepal Ventures Pvt Ltd in 2003 to start wireless phone services first in Nepal.
There are no reports of casualties in the fire that could have been caused by a faulty electric line.
