Lucknow : Crime files of some notorious mafia dons have gone missing from the courts in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said Saturday.
The Uttar Pradesh Police realised Thursday that files relating to Brijesh Singh and Atiq Ahmad had gone missing from the courts in Varanasi and Allahabad where they were facing trials.
“There is no denying that this is alarming, but we will get the files reconstructed by the concerned police stations where crimes were committed by the dons,” Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal told IANS.
He said that one of Brijesh Singh’s missing files related to a murder case of 1985. “The missing file of Atiq Ahmed was about a chargesheet in a murder case of 1983.”
Two separate inquiries have been ordered.
Lal said: “It would not be difficult to reconstruct the files though that task may take some time. But we would also like to investigate whether the files were removed by design.”
Admitting that the case of missing files was a “serious matter”, he said: “I am sure we would be able to bring the guilty to book.”
