Hamburg : Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday the UN Security Council has lost its credibility after its adoption of a new sanctions resolution against Iran.
“After this resolution the UN Security Council has lost its credibility and this body has turned into a suppressive tool in the hands of world powers (against independent countries),” Ahmadinejad said in an interview with state television.
On Wednesday, the Security Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of a fourth sanctions resolution against Iran. Only Turkey and Brazil voted against the resolution, while Lebanon abstained.
Ahmadinejad said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told him that US President Barack Obama had begged him in a lengthy telephone call to at least give an abstention and not a “no” vote to the resolution.
He said the Security Council has shown in recent years its partial and discriminatory approach, not only towards Iran but also regarding the military invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan and Israeli aggression in Palestinian territories.
“The UN Security Council votes against a country which only wants to pursue peaceful nuclear technology but cannot stop a country (Israel) from blocking aid ships sent to needy people (in the Gaza Strip),” Ahmadinejad said.
The sanctions target individuals and businesses suspected of aiding Iran’s nuclear programme or with ties to the Revolutionary Guard, which is suspected of leading an effort to develop weapons.
Iran insists that its nuclear programme is purely for peaceful purposes.
