CRPF man dies in road accident in Liberia

By IANS,

New Delhi : An Indian paramilitary trooper on a UN peace mission in Liberia has died in a road accident, a senior official said Tuesday, denying reports that he was shot dead by a Pakistani officer in the west African nation.

Constable Dinesh Kumar posted in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, “died in a road accident June 4”, Director General, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Vikram Srivastava told IANS.

Srivastava, currently on an official tour to Orissa, said the constable was hit by a truck in Monrovia and was not killed in a firing incident.

“These are two separate incidents. There was no casualty in the firing incident,” he said, adding it was being ascertained who was involved in the firing.

But sources said that on June 8 somebody opened indiscriminate fire from outside at a CRPF post in Zwedru, another city in Liberia, some 560 km southeast of Monrovia.

Constables Jeet Singh and Kaptan Singh were manning the CRPF post.

“Later, some ammunition and a rifle were recovered from in front of the post. An inquiry determined that the gun was issued to a Pakistani officer,” an official said.
