Security beefed up in Kolkata’s IT hub

By IANS,

Kolkata : Security has been beefed up at the IT township located on the eastern outskirts of Kolkata, following the abduction of a software engineer last week, police said Thursday.

Sandipan Das went missing Friday evening but returned home Sunday. The incident raised eyebrows about the security arrangements in the area.

“We have heightened the security arrangements in and around Salt Lake and Rajarhat area. Two new police stations are coming up shortly at Rajarhat New Town and Sector-V area. We have also decided to install more than 80 close circuit cameras at Salt Lake,” North 24 Pargans police superintendent Rahul Srivastava told IANS.

“Nabadiganta industrial township authority is also installing 20 close circuit cameras at Sector-V only. And we have also earmarked few places where taxi stands will come up.”

Srivastava said the police have also intensified its patrolling in the area, especially during night hours.

“We are carrying out surprise taxi checking at both Sector-V and Rajarhat area,” he added.

The IT companies have been asked to take necessary security measures at their own offices. Many of the IT companies in the areas are also installing metal detectors in their own buildings, police said.

According to sources, the New Town police station will start functioning from June this year while the Sector-V police station will be inaugurated Sunday.

“Earlier, there was only a small police outpost at Sal Lake sector-V but now it will be upgraded into a full-fledged police station headed by an inspector as in-charge rank officer. The police station will have the strength of housing 73 security personnel,” Srivastava said.

Police have, so far, arrested five people in connection with the Sandipan Das abduction case.
