New Delhi: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Tuesday expressed regret over the disrespect to Vice President Hamid Ansari in the Rajya Sabha by some parliamentarians opposing the women’s reservation bill.
“That was not at all the right thing to do,” Gandhi told NDTV in interview after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
Amid unruly scenes, a dozen members opposing the bill, tore up the document Monday and hurled the pieces at Ansari.
Gandhi, however, said that “these scenes have been seen before”. “I have not seen them in parliament but we have seen it in state assemblies. But, well what to do.”
She also told the political parties opposing the bill that nothing should stop them from giving tickets to Muslim women.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already apologised to Ansari over the members’ unruly behaviour.
