New Delhi: The global carbon lobby, using an array of false arguments effectively ensured no real progress was made at Copenhagen last year, said a report released Wednesday.

The report “Dealing in doubt” released by Greenpeace said talks at Copenhagen failed because governments were not ready to make ambitious commitments.

“There was no lack of time, only lack of political will. One of the main reasons why governments did not commit was the pressure they got from corporations,” the report said.

The report revealed that the oil lobbies not only funded anti-science projects but also led a systematic attack on the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

“Not only that, personal attacks trying to discredit climate scientists have become a method with the climate sceptics. Corporations poured in millions of dollars to fund studies and research and promote climate science antagonists,” it said.

Corporations not only lobbied governments, they also sought to undermine the science by supporting the attacks from climate sceptics on the IPCC.

The recent spate of attacks on IPCC emerge from the UK with the backing of career climate deniers and British media.

“But despite this sustained maligning, the truth is climate change is happening and is a crisis. The sceptics have not been able to dent the science and the urgency behind climate change,” it added.
