Don’t remove Frontier Constabulary from Islamabad: Police chief

By IANS,

Islamabad : Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Kaleem Imam has requested the interior ministry not to remove the Frontier Constabulary (FC) deployed for security of the Diplomatic Enclave here, a media report said Monday.

The government has decided to pull out the force after intelligence agencies revealed the involvement of some FC personnel in terror activities, The News reported on its website.

The revelations led to the arrest of five FC personnel working for Tehreek-e-Taliban.

The FC, a paramilitary force, was originally stationed in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The ministry is considering replacing the FC with police or rangers, the report said.

Meanwhile, the IGP in a letter to the ministry pointed out that the Islamabad Police are already under serious constraints due to lack of manpower to deal with the terror threats in the capital.

He said the police need to recruit at least 6,000 personnel to meet the challenges of terrorism in addition to maintaining general law and order.
