Minority recruitment in UPA: banks lead, ministries lag

New Delhi: The recruitment of minorities in central government jobs during the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre has seen steady, small growth. While ministries and their affiliated offices have not welcomed minorities in good numbers steadily, public sector banks and other financial institutions have recruited them in higher numbers. The information was disclosed by Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

Salman Khurshid on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that the Prime Minister’s New 15 Point Program for the Welfare of Minorities was launched in June, 2006. On 8th January, 2007 Department of Personnel & Training had circulated revised guidelines to all Central Ministries/Departments for giving special consideration to the recruitment of minorities in Central Government Offices and Central Public Sector Undertakings.

Giving the details about representation of minorities he said that number of minorities employed in government departments/public sector undertakings, which are compiled after the close of each financial year, are not maintained community-wise but information about the number of persons belonging to all the minority communities recruited during 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 are available.

The recruitment of minorities in paramilitary forces went up from 2700 in 2006-07 to 4914 in 2007-08 but again dipped to 3068 in 2008-09. Similar was the show at the Department of Posts. The recruitment of minorities in Railways, however, has been growing: 1,456 (in 2006-07), 2,295 (2007-08) and 3,012 (2008-09).
