Over 4,000 candidates in fray for Haryana civic polls

Chandigarh : A total of 4,134 candidates are in the fray for the May 20 municipal elections in Haryana after withdrawal of nominations by 1,282 candidates, an official of the state election commission said.

Elections to the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, 10 municipal councils and 28 municipal committees across the state will be held May 20.

A spokesman of the state election commission said Monday that after the withdrawal of nominations by 65 candidates, 493 candidates are in fray for elections to the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad.

The highest number, 236 candidates, are contesting municipal elections in Sonepat and the lowest number of 94 candidates for the municipal council in Tohana.

The general elections are being held in 35 wards of Faridabad Municipal Corporation, 266 wards of 10 municipal councils and 436 wards of 28 municipal committees.

The 10 municipal councils are Palwal, Fatehabad, Tohana, Hansi, Jind, Narwana, Thanesar, Narnaul, Sirsa and Sonepat and the 28 municipal committees are Naraingarh, Charkhi Dadri, Ratia, Sohna, Barwala, Jhajjar, Safidon, Cheeka, Gharaunda, Taraori, Assandh, Nissing, Shahabad, Ladwa, Pehowa, Mahendergarh, Nuh, Ferozepur Zhirka, Hodel, Punhana, Samalkha, Bawal, Meham, Kalanwali, Ellenabad, Rania, Gohana and Ganaur.

The ruling Congress has already announced that it will not field any candidates on the party’s official symbol.

The contest will be mainly between candidates supported by the Congress, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The state government has declared a public holiday May 20 in all towns and cities where civic polls are scheduled. Sale of liquor too has been banned May 19 and 20 in view of the elections.
