Guatemala City : A Mexican was sentenced to 60 years in prison for his involvement in the November 2008 slaughter of 19 drug traffickers, the Guatemalan Supreme Court said.
Judges in the northern province of Huehuetenango found Victor Hugo Morales guilty of criminal conspiracy and membership in an illegal armed group, a spokesman said Thursday.
Morales is thought to be among the leaders of Los Zetas, a band of Mexican special forces deserters turned outlaws.
Guatemalan authorities said the Zetas – then working for Mexico’s Gulf drug cartel – carried out the Nov 30, 2008 massacre in Agua Zarca, a village near the Mexican border.
Police officials who tracked down the Mexican rejected his offer of a $125,000 bribe to let him go.
