Haryana set to welcome Queen’s baton relay

Chandigarh : Haryana is set to welcome the Queen’s baton relay for the Commonwealth Games 2010. It will cross this state in September before entering its final destination New Delhi, officials said here Sunday.

According to the officials, the baton relay, which will reach Haryana from Rajasthan Sep 26, will remain in the state for five days. It will cross various cities and towns of the state. New Delhi is hosting the Games Oct 3-14.

“Extensive security plans have been prepared to ensure the safety and protection of Queen’s baton relay during its passage through the state,” said Haryana Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati.

She added: “Members of the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games will visit Haryana May 29 and they will remain here till June 1. They will hold meetings to discuss the preparations with various officials in different towns like Hisar, Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Jind, Rohtak and Gurgaon.”

“It would be an important event for us and we have already started preparations to make it a grand success. Cultural programmes would be held at various places on the route to entertain spectators,” Gulati said.
