Lucknow : A newly-elected member of the zila panchayat from the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district Thursday, police said.
Subash Ravi, 40, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne miscreants in Lohanpur village, some 300 km from Lucknow.
“Subash Ravi died on the spot. He was going to meet his supporters when the gunmen fired at him and fled,” Senior Superintendent of Police B.S. Srivastava told reporters in Azamgarh. Police are yet to trace the gunmen and establish the motive behind the murder.
However, sources in police said that preliminary investigations suggest the killing could be a fallout of political rivalry.
Meanwhile, supporters of the BSP carried out demonstrations at various places to protest the killing.
In the wake of the demonstrations, additional security has been deployed in the village.
