Madrid: Seventy-seven percent of Spaniards say their country’s economic situation is bad or very bad and nearly 54 percent think things have worsened over the past year, a survey has revealed.
The latest survey published Friday by the Centre for Sociological Research, or CIS also indicates that seven out of every 10 Spaniards consider the general strike a failure that was mounted Sep 29 against the labour-law overhaul enacted by the government of Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
As for the economic situation, 24.2 percent of citizens who participated in the CIS survey described as bad or very bad their personal financial situation, while 49.1 percent said it was average and 24.6 percent say it was good.
The poll shows that 43.8 percent of those questioned are working, 21 percent are jobless or looking for work, and 19.1 percent are retired or receiving a pension.
When citizens were asked which three problems affect them personally the most, 41.5 percent said unemployment, 38.2 percent the economy and 8.6 percent mentioned pensions.
CIS conducted personal interviews with 2,500 people throughout Spain during the Oct 4-14 period.
