Seoul : A security fence has been erected around COEX, the main G-20 summit venue in southern Seoul, to protect visiting global leaders and other summit participants from terrorist attacks and protesters, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted Seoul police as saying Wednesday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said the 2-meter-high fence was established late Tuesday night to surround the COEX complex, which includes a trade centre and the ASEM tower.
The fence runs about 1.8 kilometers, officials said, without elaborating on the walled section for security reasons.
Under a special law on G-20 security, rallies and demonstrations are banned within a two-kilometer radius of the summit venue through Friday.
South Korean labour and civic groups announced their plans to launch protests throughout the week in opposition to the goals and agendas of the Nov 11-12 summit, in concert with visiting activists and representatives of international organisations.
