Indian national hockey coach quits after loss to Malaysia

Guangzhou: India’s national hockey coach Harendra Singh resigned after the team’s shocking semifinal loss to Malaysia in the Asian Games here Tuesday.

“Keeping in view the dismal performance of the team in the semifinal against Malaysia, I resign as the national coach with immediate effect. I accept the moral responsibility for the debacle,” Harendra wrote to Hockey India.

“I am thankful to all the officials for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve the country. I would also convey my gratitude for the unconditional support I received from my countrymen as well as well wishers.

“I convey my sincere thanks to the players and support staff of the team. I wish luck to the team for the future,” he said.

India twice handed over the lead to go down to Malaysia, who won through a golden goal.
