Lucknow: Taking into account the rising Hindi readership, popular English daily Pioneer went vernacular Saturday with its Editor-in-Chief Chandan Mitra launching the first Hindi edition of the paper from here.
The 146-year-old newspaper that was started in Allahabad in 1864, has seven editions – five of which were launched after Mitra took over its reins in 1998. The paper’s Delhi edition was brought out in 1991.
“Taking into account the rising potential of Hindi readership and impact, we took the decision to bring out Pioneer in Hindi as well and because Lucknow is the original home of the paper, we have launched the first Hindi edition from here,” Mitra told reporters.
“We have plans of taking it beyond Uttar Pradesh to other Hindi-speaking states where we have our English edition in place,” he added.
Narrating the “difficult” times that the newspaper had gone through, Mitra said: “I am glad that we have made it a success story and that we are able to provide objective and unbiased content and quality to our readers.”
“Let me also clarify that the Hindi paper will not be a translation of the English daily. Other than articles by experts and established writers, the rest of the content will be totally independent of the English paper,” he added.
