New Delhi : Police personnel should join the Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) masters programme in counselling and family therapy and become more “empathetic”, Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said here Friday.
“The family as a counselling unit used to be effective but now that great system has eroded. Hence, there is a greater need for more trained counsellors. I would advise police personnel to join (the programme) to become more empathetic,” Walia said.
The newly launched M.Sc. and Post Graduate Diploma programmes in counselling and family therapy are being jointly coordinated by IGNOU’s National Centre for Disability Studies and School of Continuing Education.
The two-day orientation programme was attended by about 70 IGNOU programme coordinators from all over the country.
IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai said: “If any institute in the country wants to start a programme like this, IGNOU will be more than ready to help in every possible way.”
