AMU alumni celebrate Sir Syed Day in Kolkata

Kolkata: To pay homage to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, West Bengal chapter of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association celebrated Sir Syed Day today at Hotel Hindustan International in Kolkata.

The program was attended by politicians, educationists and dignitaries including West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Prof P.K. Abul Azis, Vice Chancellor of AMU and Maulana Wali Rahmani, Chairman of Rahmani Foundation. Besides, hundreds of AMU alumni were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the function, Chief Minister gave all the credits to AMU Vice Chancellor Prof Azis for AMU campus at Murshidabad and assured that the entire infrastructure needed for the development of the campus will be provided by him. He also ensured that he would particularly look into the matter related to the development of roads from national highway to the campus and uninterrupted power supply there.

While thanking to Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, AMU Vice Chancellor requested him to continue his support for the campus. He also informed that the foundation stone will be laid down at Murshidabad on 20th November 2010 by Union Human Resource Minister Mr Kapil Sibbal while Union Finance Minister Mr Paranab Mukherjee and Chief Minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharya will also grace the occasion.

He also announced that AMU has already announced to start the courses at Murshidabad campus from academic session 2010-11. The classes will start at the temporary building which has taken on rent by the state government. The aspirants can take online admission on official website http://www.amucontrollerexams.com/.

In his speech, Maulana Wali Rehmani stressed on Muslim education and lauded AMU VC for his efforts in this field. “He has launched a movement for Muslim education and the establishment of the five campuses is part of that. He will be remembered as most successful AMU VC in the history” he said.

“I appreciate the development done at Alia University but it would have been better if the religious education would not be neglected there because it was the real purpose of the institution but it is not so and currently we feel as we got a small university at the cost of big Madarsa” he added.

Supporting the demand of Old Boys Association for land he urged Chief Minister to provide the land to Association as the government provided it to many other institutions.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Moinul Hassan (Member of Parliament), Mohammad Salim,(Chairman, WBMFDC, and Ex Member of Parliament) & Prof Swapan Kumar Pramanick (Vice-Chancellor of Vidya Sagar University).
