Wellington : The facilities at the Commonwealth Games Village in Delhi have got the nod of approval from New Zealand chef de mission Dave Currie, though he feels the block assigned to his country is in need of some good scrubbing.
Currie is in New Delhi to report back to the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) as to whether he believed the Games are viable for the athletes to participate. The first athletes are due in the Village Sep 25.
Currie reported that while facilities in Tower 32, the residential block in the Games Village where the team will be housed, were good, it was not clean enough.
“Aspects of the village are very good,” Currie was quoted as saying in New Zealand Herald. “The athlete recreational and training areas are outstanding and the dining hall is of a very high standard.
“In saying that, however, our tower needs a good clean before we can operationalise it.”
Security measures around the perimeter of the village also got Currie’s nod who said they appeared robust.
Currie is working among officials from the Wales, England, Canada and Australia teams.
“I’ve been told that the venues appear to be operational and in pretty good shape,” Currie said.
“The unseasonably late monsoon means there are still pools of water around and this is a focus for organisers. There is still some preparation work needed to be done on the main stadium,” he added.
