Gopalganj: More than 10 villages in Bihar’s Gopalganj district were flooded today and thousands of panchayats are in immediate danger after the Gandak River overflowed its banks due to release of over two lakh cusecs of water in the river from Nepal following heavy rains there.

The embankment in Chamaria village under the Barauli block in Gopalganj district was breached at 200 meters, leading the water to villages. The old embankment was being strengthened to protect the new one close to the river under the supervision of DM and SP, but as the breach took place, laborers fled the scene in panic. Due to sudden release of water from Nepal, water level in Gandak went up.

Though there is no report of human casualty as of now, the danger of devastating flood is facing in the eye of thousands of panchayats in the district as well as neighboring Siwan and Chapra districts.

Meanwhile the administration has sounded red alert in various blocks including Barauli, Sidhwalia and Baikundpur.
