Rahul’s Ayodhya remarks reflect aspirations of youth: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Congress said Friday that party general secretary Rahul Gandhi had reflected the aspirations of a very large section of the youth by his suggestion that there were more pressing concerns in the country like education and infrastructure than the Ayodhya dispute.

Responding to queries about Gandhi’s remarks on Thursday during a closed-door session with students at IIT Guwahati, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said that the party leader had “contextualised” the dispute.

“He has reflected the aspirations of a very large section of young people. I can tell you that even way back in 1985, young India, even at that time, had felt that issues connected with daily life are something more fundamental and pertinent to governance,” Tewari said.

The spokesman said that Gandhi had only “underscored the kind of India that he and the younger generation aspire to build”.

The Congres general secretary was asked if it was worthwhile at this time to spend time and energy over whether a temple or mosque should be built at Ayodhya. He replied, saying his personal view was that there were many fundamental issues which were more important like infrastructure, type of education provided to youngsters and the type of technology used by people.

The Supreme Court Thursday ordered an interim stay till Sep 28 on the pronouncement of the Ayodhya verdict by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The high court was due to deliver its verdict on the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi title suit Friday.
