Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is to head to Washington on Tuesday for talks with his US counterpart Hillary Clinton on the crumbling Mideast peace negotiations, a Foreign Ministry official said here Monday.
Addressing the press in Berlin, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said the meeting on Wednesday would also focus on Iran’s nuclear program, the situation in Sudan and NATO’s new strategic concept.
Germany has joined the US in making last-ditch efforts to rescue the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks following Sunday night’s expiration of the Zionist regime’s self- imposed freeze on West Bank settlement construction.
Merkel and Obama discussed the issue of the fragile Mideast peace talks on the phone last week.
‘The two leaders emphasized their support for the direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians and agreed that all sides should make every possible effort to sustain the talks,’ according to the White House.
Both agreed that Israel should ‘extend its moratorium on settlement activity and that the negotiations should press on until completed.’
