Malaysian athletes told to beware “stingings” at Delhi Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur : While the level of security appears at the Commonwealth Games set to open innew Delhi on oct 3 appear to bewell under control, Malaysian athletes have been warned to be wary of “stinging attacks” which might derail their hopes to bag medals.

This hidden enemy which might surface during the 12-day festival of sports in the Indian capital is the Aedes aegypti mosquito which causes the dreaded dengue fever.

“Take the necessary precautionary measures against dengue fever,” advised Olympic Council of Malaysia President Tunku Imran Tuanku Jaafar, who was was in New Delhi last month to attend a meeting of the Executive Board for Commonwealth Games Federation.

“While the sports village is well-designed and the facilities good, the only worrying situation is the monsoon rain and the escalating number of dengue cases in New Delhi,”
Tunku Imran told reporters after flagging off participants of the McDonald’s Olympic Day Run at Merdeka Square here Sunday.

He was commenting on complaints by several participating countries that India was unable to complete on time, all infrastucture works given by the Commenwealth Games Federation.
The Games bring together athletes from some 70 countries, most of them former British colonies and territories.

Malaysia is competing in aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowling, ping pong, shooting, squash, rugby and three paralympic events.

Tunku Imran said the Indian Government had taken the necessary measures to overcome whatever teething problems, adding that the country was ready to host the Games.

About 7,000 participants participated in Sunday’s Olympic Day Run divided into seven categories, ranging from Men’s Open to lower primary school levels.
