Benghazi : Libya’s rebel leaders Friday expressed their readiness to abide by a ceasefire, provided Libyan leader Muammar Gaddaffi also does so, Arab Al Jazeera TV reported.
“Our condition for the ceasefire is the withdrawal of pro-Gaddafi forces, brigades and mercenaries from the cities and their nearby areas,” Xinhua quoted rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil saying during a press conference held in the presence of UN special envoy Abdelilah Al-Khatib.
Abdel Jalil said any ceasefire without meeting this condition could pave the way for Libya’s separation, asking for weapons to fight the pro-Gaddafi forces.
“If the Gaddafi leadership keeps on its suppression of rebels, we are in the need for weapons…to strike a military balance,” he said.
The government forces “randomly” bombarded Libya’s town of Misrata, 150 km from the capital Tripoli, the report stated.
