Night-long celebrations in Andhra Pradesh

By IANS,

Hyderabad : It was Saturday night fever across Andhra Pradesh as cricket fans spent the whole night celebrating India’s win in the World Cup finals.

Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, Warangal and other towns were draped in unprecedented patriotism as the boisterous crowds indulged in wild celebrations, something never seen in the past.

The celebrations, which began soon after M.S. Dhoni hit the six to script a historic victory in the final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai, continued till the early hours of Sunday.

Men, women and children fanned out on the streets to join the celebrations. And the national flag was everywhere.

Some were holding the tricolour, others placed it atop the zooming cars and bikes.

Youngsters on motorcycles zoomed around the roads, continuously honking and shouting slogans of “Jai ho” and “India, India”. Many revellers were riding triple on two-wheelers and violating traffic rules, but it was ignored as the policemen deployed to prevent any untoward incidents themselves joined the revellers.

The roads around Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city filled with hundreds of cars and motor cycles. There was a traffic jam on almost all major roads well past the midnight. The night skies were lighted up with firecrackers.

It was like a New Year or Diwali celebrations as the city did not sleep. From the roads in the IT hub of Hitec City, posh Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills to Charminar, the symbol of Hyderabad and the dingy lanes in the old city, there were celebrations every where.

“I was not even born when India won the world cup in 1983 but I want to enjoy this moment and make it memorable,” said T. Yadav, a student.
