By IANS,

Sana’a : Police shot dead at least 10 anti-government protesters Monday in Yemen’s southern province of Taiz, Xinhua quoted local doctors as saying. However, a police official said only two protesters were killed.

According to the head of the makeshift hospital of the Liberation Square in Taiz, some 200 km south of the capital Sana’a, the doctors received 10 protesters who died of gunshots from police snipers and dozens of others injured by live bullets.

The doctor in Taiz said the police snipers intercepted the march of thousands of young protesters who were demanding an immediate end to the 33-year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Tens of protesters attempted to storm the provincial government building and the police forces confronted them with force to end the demonstration, Xinhua quoted a provincial police official as saying.

“Only two protesters were killed and some others were injured,” the official said, requesting anonymity.
