Mild tremors in Chandigarh, neighbouring towns

By IANS,

Chandigarh : Mild tremors were felt in Chandigarh and surrounding towns Monday evening after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake centred in the India-Nepal border, officials said.

A senior official of the meteorological department described it as a quake of moderate intensity emerging from the Nepal-India border.

“In this region, it was comparatively mild and so far no reports of damage and casualties have come in from Punjab and Haryana,” the official told IANS.

However, there was panic in some areas with people in upper floors rushing downstairs.

“I live on the third floor and I was in the kitchen when I felt the jerks. We got frightened and we immediately ran downstairs,” Bhanu Kehar, a homemaker, told IANS.
