Delhi seeks Japanese agency’s help to end water crisis

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that it will be taking Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) help for preparing the ‘Water Master Plan’ to end the water crisis in Delhi.

Appearing before a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Reva Khetrapal, DJB counsel said that Jal Board officers were working in consultation with JICA to prepare the master plan and to provide the infrastructure facility in the existing area and the new areas of the city as per the Delhi Master Plan 2021.

It was also submitted that after accepting the suggestions from the company, the department would start constructing underground reservoirs in various places to supply adequate water to the residents.

The court was also informed that the Delhi government has paid Rs.200 crore to Himachal Pradesh and Rs.160 crore to Haryana so that the city gets sufficient water.

The court was hearing a plea by advocate Surender Kumar Sharma, who alleged that the DJB has failed to supply adequate water to the public in Mohalla Gangaram area of Shahadara.

“Despite directions from the high court for construction of an underground reservoir in the area, no step has been taken to address the issue,” said Sharma.

Meanwhile, the bench directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to allot land for construction of the reservoir in Mohalla Gangaram and also directed the DJB officials to visit the area to curb the misuse of water by the public.

Earlier, the court directed the DJB to construct underground reservoirs to supply adequate water in various localities of the city.
