Indian jailed in Pakistan to be freed Thursday

Chandigarh : Gopal Dass (50), the Indian jailed in Pakistan for over 27 years, is expected to be released Thursday, according to his brother Anand Veer.

“My brother’s lawyer called me today (Wednesday) and informed me that Gopal Dass will be released from the jail tomorrow (Thursday),” Veer, who lives here with his family, told IANS.

According to Veer, an ex-army man, his bother’s lawyer Awais Sheikh told him that all formalities have been completed and that Dass will return to India through the Attari-Wagah border check-post Thursday.

“I am going there to receive him,” he said.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on March 27 announced the release of Dass from the jail on humanitarian grounds.

Gopal Dass was arrested in Pakistan in 1984 and was jailed on spying charges. Since then he has been lodged in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.
