Movement needs to be taken to real democracy: Prashant Bhushan

New Delhi : Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement needs to move towards more participation of people in the decision-making process, well-known activist-lawyer and member of the joint Lokpal Bill drafting committee Prashant Bhushan said Saturday.

“This movement needs to be taken forward to participatory and real democracy. We really need to move towards more participation of people in decision-making and law-making from this present mode,” Bhushan told a news channel.

He spoke after veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare broke his 97-hour fast following the government accepting all his demands on the Lokpal bill.

He said that the movement has made people realise that they can organise themselves to bring change. He said that the feeling of “hopelessness, helplessness that they elect some person and then (he) rules in corruption for the next five years” can go.

“They are seeing the signs of change,” he said.

Regarding the anti-graft bill, he said that the drafting will begin soon with public consultations and thereafter “clause by clause formulation of the legislation”.

“We hope to do that (complete the draft by June 30), provided the ministers in the committee devote adequate time to it. And I expect that they would,” he said.

The lawyer also said that none of the organisers behind the movement “expected such an overwhelming response to the issue”.
