Orissa hails Anna’s victory

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar : Supporters of the anti-corruption movement here distributed sweets, hugged each other and danced with joy to mark the victory of veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare who ended his 97-hour fast in New Delhi Saturday.

Two social activists, who had launched a hunger strike at state capital Bhubaneswar to express solidarity with Hazare, called off their fast. “It was the victory of the people,” said Bhabani Parija, one of the activists who was on fast here.

“We are satisfied. The government had to agree to the demands,” said Rabi Das, president of civil society organisation Orissa Jana Sammilani (OJS) which has been organising a demonstration here since past three days.

“It is the first time the government has accepted the role of the civil society and people in framing the law,” he said.

Oriya film star Akash Nayak said: “The spontaneous response to Hazare’s call proved that the common people are concerned about corruption.”

Anna Hazare broke his fast Saturday after the government agreed to his demands for a stringent anti-graft bill.
